The rotunda was built in 1931 as a bandstand and a war memorial and is a rare example that illustrates the efforts taken to provide work for the unemployed during the Depression years.

This structure is one of those whose construction was commissioned in an effort to provide relief for unemployed workers, many of whom were former First World War soldiers, and was built by the Workers Benevolent Society and citizens of Peterborough. A local committee of the Australian Labour Party established the Workers Benevolent Society to arrange the work and this bandstand was built to replace an earlier, less substantial one.

The Society provided the funds for the labour and local citizens provided the materials.
