Gatton Boer War Memorial

Story

The Gatton Boer War Memorial was unveiled on 3 August, 1908 by Governor of Queensland, Lord Chelmsford and was designed by architect, William Hodgen. The stone memorial commemorates four local men who lost their lives in the Boer War.

This monument is important, as it was constructed at an early phase of history of war memorials in the state of Queensland, which became prolific after World War One. The Gatton Boer War Memorial is one of the only two known digger statues built to commemorate the involvement and death of Queensland solders in the South African (Boer) War.

It names three young men who died in 1900 and one died in Gatton in 1906. A plaque honours the men of the 13th Light Horse, Queensland Mounted Infantry, and displays their insignia and motto.
