The Bundaberg Mail of 21 June 1920 states the Kalbar School Memorial had been erected after being designed and executed by Bundaberg monumental mason Mr E.N. Downes. Reaching a height of 9 feet from base to summit it was manufactured from Sydney freestone and features a broken column with a carved bandolier and rifle. The names of four young men from Kalbar State School who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War are inscribed on the lower portion (originally in gold) and a verse is inscribed on the base. At its original site at Kalbar State School a 5-foot square base was included. It was bordered with coping and pallstones, while the floor was concreted and covered with New Zealand pebbles.

Kalbar State School was closed in 1962 and the memorial moved to South Kolan State School in approximately 1966.
