Hervey Bay Z Force War Memorial
This is a new memorial replacing a similar structure and overlooking Fraser Island, where the main Z Force training took place. The more tropical training was on the Atherton Tablelands for those of operation Jaywick.
Operation Jaywick included the captured vessel Kafuku Maru (renamed Krait) that sank 38,000 tons of Japanese shipping in Singapore Harbour in 1943. All 14 returned home. Operation Rimau that followed (a similar type operation), was of tragic consequences in the loss of all 23 including 10 by be-heading. Operations Jaywick and Rimau are remembered including the names of those who served. The operations were during World War II.
The Kafuka Maru (later the Krait) was captured by HMAS Maryborough. It was a Japanese Navy spy vessel. It was also the first enemy vessel captured in the Pacific in WWII. HMAS Maryborough then towed it to Singapore Harbour.
On top of the memorial is a location guide to surrounding islands including Fraser Island.
