On the anniversary of the sinking of the MS Montevideo Maru on 1st July each year, there is a Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

On 1st July 2019, there was a Last Post Ceremony for Lloyd Sibraa, one of the 133 commandos from the 1st Independent Company who has been recorded as dying on the MS Montevideo Maru on 1st July 1942.

His life story was read out to the audience who were present at the Last Post Ceremony as well as to the audience on YouTube and Facebook. The story of the sinking of the MS Montevideo Maru was told. There were also speeches by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition and the laying of wreaths.

At the beginning of the new Parliament, the Director of the Australian War Memorial invites all federal politicians to attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.
