Taken from the plaques on the memorial:

"This monument is to honour the memory of Harold Gatty. Who in 1931 won world fame as an air navigator after his record-breaking flight with Wiley Post in the Winnie Mae as a group captain in the R.A.A.F.  He was director of air transport for the allied forces in the Pacific area. 

Born at Campbell Town 1903 - Died at Fiji 1957

This memorial was constructed by Hobart Technical college, 1960"

"To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first world flight from New York by U.S pilot Wiley Post with Harold Gatty of Tasmania as navigator, June 23rd to July 1st 1931.

And to honour Harold Gatty born at Campbell Town, Tasmania, January 1903 and died at Suva, Fiji, August, 1957.

He was the pioneer of the Pacific Air Route Pan American Airways, 1941, and founded the Fijian Airways.

He was given special permission to serve in the U.S Army Air Service during the Second World War, and was decorated by an Act of Congress, United States of America with a Distinguished Service Cross. 

Presented in Tribute by the Australian-American Association, July 1st, 1981"
