Tribute to Fortitude and Bravery of the Crew of HMAS Perth
HMAS Perth was built at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard and commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Amphion on 15 June 1936.
She was purchased by the Australian Government and commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy on 29 June 1939.
The ship was torpedoed by the Japanese and sank on 1 March 1942. Of the Perth`s company of 686, only 218 were repatriated. Many became prisoners of war and were incarcerated in camp near Batavia, Java.
On August 12 2018, the city's birthday plaque, erected in the Perth Town Hall in remembrance of HMAS Perth, was unveiled by the Lieut.-Governor, Sir James Mitchell. The Lord Mayor, Dr. Meagher, said that the tablet was not to be regarded as a memorial but as tribute to a gallant ship and to the fortitude and bravery of her crew.
