James Tynan was an assistant steward/saloon boy on the Norwegian merchant ship the MV Herstein in 1942. James came from Sydney.

The MV Herstein was sunk by Japanese aircraft in Rabaul Harbour on 20 January 1942. When Rabaul fell to the Japanese on 23 January 1942 James Tynan became a prisoner of war.

His name is on the list of prisoners who died on the MS Montevideo Maru on 1 July 1942 when the Japanese prisoner transport ship was sunk by an American submarine. James Tynan was 16.

His name is on the National Archives of Australia's Montevideo Maru website which lists the names of the prisoners who died on the MS Montevideo Maru on 1 July 1942.

His name is also on the Australian War Memorial's Commemorative Roll.
