The original memorial was dedicated on the 11th of August 1923.  On the 2nd of January 1949 a plaque was added, featuring the hand prints and foot prints of a child, Stanley McDermid.  The plaque represents the loss felt by children when a father is killed in war.

N167227 Lance Corporal Keith McDermid was a Militia (Citizens Military Force) soldier in the 36th Australian Infantry Battalion of the Australian Army. He was serving with the 36th Battalion in Papua when he was killed in action on the 22nd of December 1942 at Sanananda.  He is buried in Bomana War Cemetery in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
