The four marble lions were dedicated in May 1916 to the memory of Old Boys who had fallen in the Gallipoli campaign.  Therefore they are one of the earliest WWI war memorials in Australia.  The names of those deaths and others in following years were listed on marble plaques.  In 1982 the Lions were moved from their position in front of Adamson Hall to the war memorial forecourt in front of the main entry to the school.  The marble plaques with the names of 148 men are now located in other parts of the school.
