Memorial Plague to the Royal Australian Navy to Commemorate the Navy Centenary year 1911-2011

Dedicated to the men and women from Goulburn & district who served with distinction on many Australian ships & shore defences.

With a special mention to the corvette HMAS Goulburn commissioned February 28th 1941 broken up as scrap November 1953

The ship cannon shells C1911 are from the battle cruisers HMAS Australia & HMAS New Zealand

Donated by Snapper Island Museum 2005

The shell is 12inch HE (high explosive) and weight approx. 280kgs. The 12 inch penetrators are stubbier and weigh 380kg. Nearly all the markings on the shell were for accounting purposes used by the Ordanance Depot (in this case, Spectacle Island). They are batch numbers/date of manufacture/assigned to which ship. There is no known record to decipher the numbers further. The arrow indicates they were owned by HM Govt and were an Admiralty approved pattern.

The numbers on the shell are:

S888 1087 37; 1496-5; S888 12.10.11; 4633-A; AN; KH; ^

S888 1086 3ES; 1838-5; S888 15.11.11; 4633-A; N.Z.; C.C.; ^
