Nyabing Memorial Park History
(Aerial Photo taken by Darren Gray)
In the 1920's the people of Nyabing planted an "Avenue of Honor" that ran parallel to the railway (directly opposite the Shire Council Offices on Richmond Street) as the Nyabing RSL Branch was in its infancy. The Settlers Hall is now located to the west of these trees that remain.
In 1957, the present War Memorial was unveiled at its current location on the corner of Aspendale and Jury Street, by our RSL Branch, using marble stones commemorating the war dead.
In 1991 the park was upgraded with the Nyabing Primary School adopting the park and contributing to the design. Twenty Six trees were planted by the students at this time.
The Park has had another redevelopment during 2013 to bring the playground up to current specifications, and with this, the original marble tablets were removed (relocated to a more protected area to the west of the Settlers Hall on the main street), and the complete redevelopment has allowed us to turn our Anzac Day Service into the Park (instead of standing on the road). Although the tree's planted had to be removed due to the dropping of limbs, the new exercise and play equipment is utilised most afternoons throughout the year.
In 2010, we had 45 residents turn up to our Anzac Day Service, and in 2018 we welcomed over 150 attendees to our Service.
