Burrum Heads was primarily a retirement and fishing village with a poor road system. There was no direct road to Hervey Bay.

In 1972 a Community Centre was built and at about that time servicemen organized a memorial so as to save the long trip on Anzac Day.

Every year since, on Anzac and Memorial Day, a Remembrance Service is held. No names are listed on the memorial, but that does not stop a large attendance.
