The monument commemorates members of the Parish who served in World War Two.

It was built by Squadron Leader Arthur Whitehurst who had commanded a squadron at Ashfield during the period 1941-1946. Whitehurst's own son, Douglas Arthur Whitehurst, had died in action in World War Two.

The memorial contains the names of 22 men from the parish who died in service or were killed in action during World War Two, and also those who served.

A memorial service attended by Australian Air Force Cadet has been held annually since it was opened by the State Governor Lieutenant General John Northcott in 1946.
