Bruce Astley was an ex-student of Dubbo High School. He was the third son of Laurence Astley, the donor of the Astley Cup. The Astley Cup, which is a multi sports competition, began in 1923. Firstly competed for by Dubbo High School and the Sacred Heart College at Dubbo. Since 1925 the contesting schools have been Dubbo High School (now Dubbo College), Bathurst High School and Orange High School. In 1934 Bruce Astley was a member of the Dubbo High School's Astley Cup football team. At that time rugby union was the football code played in the Astley Cup.

Bruce Astley was in the RAAF. Whilst Bruce was a flying instructor in the UK he was killed during a flying school accident on 28 January 1942.
