The cemetery was established following successful lobbying by the League of Loyal Women, concerned about the lack of recognition of the contribution of ex-servicemen who had been buried in the old cemetery.  The graves of 4167 ex-service personnel now lay in the cemetery, which is closed to further burials.  On the boundary of the cemetery, close to the lines of graves, is a solitary pine tree, beneath which is a plaque explaining the origin of the tree.  Full details of the origin and development of the cemetery are contained on line at the following locations which may be copied and pasted in the URL line of your browser:
