Green Hill Fort was built between 1891 and 1893 as part of Australia's defence against a possible Russian invasion.

It was eventually decommissioned around 1927 with most of the supporting buildings demolished and the guns spiked. Green Hill Fort was reactivated during World War II and was used as a signals and wireless site.
