Story

The sole surviving example of several air raid shelters built in Gordonvale  in early 1942.  It is not wholly intact and the remnant stands opposite of what was once the site of US Army Hospital. It was built to a standard design prevalent at the  time and could seat up to 50 people.  It is believed about 57 shelters were built between Cairns and Mackay.  A more complete example can be found  in the township of Babinda
