In November 1916, there was a dedication of an impressive memorial built for six tram workers who had laid down their lives in World War 1. Four were killed within the first week of the landing at Gallipoli.

Another twenty-eight names were added in the following two years.

The memorial, one of the first WWI memorials in Australia, was given a prominent setting in the award-winning gardens and featured a grand white plinth.

The tramway depot was closed in 1959. The trams were replaced with buses and the top half of the memorial, a sculpture of a soldier, was moved to Leichhardt bus depot where it was sat upon a base of house bricks in a corner near the back gate of the depot.

The memorial was refurbished by the City of Sydney and relocated to its original position where it was re-dedicated on 8th November 2018.
