There had been a contemporary World War 1 Honour Board in the Yendon Progress Hall, but it was destroyed by fire.

In 2012, the original State School Roll of Honour Book was discovered at the Buninyong RSL Hall, where it had been deposited for safe keeping when the school was closed.  Members of the recently formed Yendon History Group undertook to research the 48 soldiers and sailors whose names were written in the book, prior to the 2015 centenary of the Gallipoli campaign.

It was ultimately discovered that there were 63 young men who had been students at the school, or who had lived for a time in Yendon, who served in World War 1.  A new Honour Board was ordered, listing the names of those who had been killed in action, and also those who had returned.  (Some years later one further soldier was discovered, and an addendum board has been added.)

On 27 April 2014, about 400 community members and visitors attended a ceremony to unveil the new Honour Board.  A book was published giving a biography of all of these servicemen.
