The trees in the Avenue of Honour were planted by the community on Saturday 21 August 1920 (refer Ballarat Star 28 Aug).  In 1987 the children from the local public school tried to work out the significance of the trees that remained at that time, but came to no conclusion.

In 2012 the school's Roll of Honour book was rediscovered at the Buninyong RSL Hall, and the newly formed Yendon History Group undertook to research the book and the trees in preparation for the 2015 centenary of Gallipoli.

On 27 April 2014, the newly restored Avenue of Honour was rededicated.  With assistance from Moorabool Shire Council, seven new trees had been planted in the spaces between the nine old trees.  Plaques were fixed for each tree, and family members of the deceased soldiers, and of soldiers who returned, unveiled their names.
