Bertie was born at Monteagle near Young. His next of kin was his Mother, Amelia Miller of ‘Tenley’ Nasmyth Street, Young. 

Bertie enlisted on 17 July 1915, aged 28 years and 11 months. His attestation papers say he was a shunter with the railways. Bertie embarked on the HMAT A56 Palermo from Sydney on 18 APRIL 1916, marching into the 2nd Light Horse Regiment Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt, on 10 June 1916. Bertie is recorded as being in Moascar, Marakeb, El-Fukhari, Kazar, Rafa, Kantara, Abbassia, and Montazah, with his Regiment. 

Bertie contracted malaria, in the field in Ludd. He was admitted to hospital in Kantara with pyrexia on 20 July 1918. 

Bertie embarked the SS Kildonan Castle bound for Australia, from Suez, on 2 April 1919. He was discharged, 50% invalidity, by 2 Military District, Sydney on 15 April 1919. 

Bertie died of appendicitis and peritonitis on 20 February 1921 at No 4 Australian General Hospital, Randwick. Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory.
