Henry was born near Young to Jesse and Alice Eva Johnson. Henry was Church of England, single, working as a waiter, and living in Murrumburrah. 

Henry enlisted in Murrumburrah, on 14 November 1916 at the stated age of 18 years 9 months. Henry’s Brother, 3162 Private JOHNSON Frank, enlisted 13 September 1916. Henry’s next of kin was his Father, Jesse, of Spring Hill, Young. 

Henry embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A15 Port Sydney on 9 May 1917. Disembarked Suez 20 June 1917. 

Henry was killed in action on 4 December 1917, by a gunshot wound to the head. He died near Hill 265 Jaffa, Palestine. Henry’s rank, on the Nominal Roll, at the time of his death was Corporal. 

His record says he was promoted to Lance Corporal 9 November 1917, in the field in Moascar. Henry was buried in the Camel Brigade Cemetery by C Scott-Little near where he fell on 4 December 1917. On 7 January 1919 Henry’s Father was advised: “It has been found necessary to exhume the bodies buried in the area in which you were advised your son was interred and re-bury them.” 

Henry’s body was moved to Wilhelma Military Cemetery, 9 ½ miles east of Jaffa, Palestine. The Australian War Memorial records Henry as being buried at the Ramleh War Cemetery, Ramla, Isarael.
