Ambrose was born in Surrey, United Kingdom. His vocation was a Mechanical Engineer. He had completed 15 months of an apprenticeship with Wilson and Pilcher in Westminster, before coming to Australia. 

Ambrose was 28 years and 8 months old when he enlisted, at Randwick, on 24 August 1914. His address on enlistment was care of AR Middlemiss, Nasmyth Street, Young. His next of kin was recorded as Mr HT Friswell, Flatford, East Bergholt, Suffolk, UK. 

Ambrose embarked from Sydney, HMAT A23 Suffolk 18 October 1914, arriving at Alexandria 8 December 1914. 

In March 1915 Ambrose was admitted to hospital. He died of pneumonia on 11 March 1915 at Mena in Egypt. He is buried in the British Protestant Cemetery, Cairo. Ambrose’s personal effects, his wallet, wrist-watch, papers, knife, keys on key-ring, chocolate box containing postcards, pocket wallet, diary, and letters, were sent to Mr Friswell. 

They were delayed getting to the right address being sent to Surrey instead of Suffolk. Ambrose received the 1914-15 Star Medal, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. These along with his Memorial Plaque were sent to Mr Friswell in England
