450 Sergeant LEE “Leo” Arthur

Arthur was born in Tamworth the son of William Southworth Lee and Matilda Lee. Prior to his enlistment he worked as a foreman at a timber yard in Young. 

Leo enlisted 24 August 1914 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT A8 Argyllshire on 18 October 1914. His next of kin was his Mother, Mrs W S Lee, care of Mrs Spencer, Livingston Road, Marrickville. 

Leo arrived in Alexandria on board the SS Caledonia 22 December 1915. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 March 1916 in Tel-el Kebirl. He saw active service in Marseilles, Alexandria and Caestre. Leo was promoted to Sergeant on 12 June 1916. He was hospitalised 26 August 1916 for pyoderma, returning to duty 2 September 1916. 

Leo died on 16 November 1916 aged 32 of (multiple) wounds received at Flers, France. He is buried in the Bernafay Wood British Cemetery, Montauban de Picardie, France.
