5155 Private MILLER “Dot” George Edward

George was born in Young on 27 August 1885. He was the 5th of 11 children born to Matthew Miller and Anna Mary Spliet. 

George enlisted on 17 September 1915 aged 30 years and 1 month. He was single and a tailor, apprenticed to Lazzarini’s in Young.

George’s next of kin was his Father, Matthew, of Currawong Street, Young. George embarked from Australia on 1 April 1916 on the HMAT SS Makarini, disembarking Suez 2 May 1916. 

George was reported killed in action in France between 22 and 25 July 1916. In June 1918, a fellow soldier responded to a Red Cross inquiry into George’s death stating he was killed in battle on 23 July 1916. 

MILLER Pte G 5155 Killed in Action. 23-7-16 Came from Australia, on same boat as myself “Makarini” 8-4-16. He was in C Company. Our battn. Was attacking at Poziers, in front of the village, when I saw him killed by a shell, in the early morning of 23-7-16. I was only about ten yards away from him, when he fell, killed instantly, being hit in the head and chest. The same day he was buried, where he fell: by the Padre of our Brigade, Capt McKenzie, myself assisting. A cross suitably inscribed was erected by our Battn. He came from Sydney. Was called Dot by his mates. DESCRIPTION: Medium height, Stout, Dark complexion, going bald. INFORMANT Pte BJ Parsons, 1st Battn AIF” 
George is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
