Ross BrayThe Memorial Gates were erected to commemorate those who had served in World War One.
The ceremony of officially opening the honour gates at the Kelvin Grove Boys State School was performed on the 15th February 1919 by the Mayor of Ithaca, Alderman A. Kaye in front of a large gathering. The gates were designed and constructed by Mr D. Walker of Kelvin Grove at a cost of £24 the subscriptions being raised by parents and friends of the school.
They are unique, and somewhat imposing. The pillars are of reinforced concrete and are surmounted by a scroll bearing the inscription "Honour Our Boys" on the top of which rests a shield carrying the dates 1914 and 1919, and flanked with the Union Jack and the Australian flag, with panels on each side.
