‘Country News’, The Argus (Melbourne, VIC), 13 Jun 1917, p11 reports the opening and naming of the Amphitheatre Anzac Avenue.

The residents of Amphitheatre, to perpetuate the memory of the soldiers who enlisted from the township, aided by a vote of £20 from the shire council, purchased 56 pine trees, planted them, and erected guards. The trees, which were planted with due ceremony, form what should grow into a splendid avenue, extending from Amphitheatre along the Avoca road. The avenue was formally declared open by Councillor R. W. Laidlaw, president of the Lexton Shire and named by him at the request of the people, “Anzac Avenue."
