Heroes, Larrikins & Visionaries of Broken Hill Walk

An easy to follow self-guided tour through interesting parts of town.  Meet some of our remarkable characters.  Take home a souvenir certificate.  Distance 1.7km return.  Allow 1 hour.

The Walk consists of 25 stainless steel numbered plaques along the way from the station.

There are two military personalities:

  • 8, Lieutenant Vivian Bullwinkel, the sole survivor of the Japanese massacre of nurses on Banga Island during WWII, and leader of local Anzac parades after the war; and
  • 14, Private Reginald Inwood VC, awarded the Victoria Cross for sustained bravery over a period of three days under heavy fire in WWI.

There is also a plaque commemorating the so-called 1915 ‘Battle of Broken Hill’:

  • 20, Jihad, two devout Moslems declared a holy war on Broken Hill on New Year’s Day 1915.  They ambushed the picnic train from Broken Hill to Silverton.  They killed four locals and were quickly despatched after a chase.
