The column was unveiled by Sir Neville Howse, VC, on Saturday 26 January 1924. According to the Forbes Advocate of 1 February 1924, quite a few returned servicemen were present in the large crowd.

It is '16 feet high, built of polished freestone on a concrete foundation with two tiers of (malachite?) steps. The front panel has inscribed on it the names of 93 who fell during the Great War; the other three panels contain the names of 358 who also answered the call to arms. The cost of the monument was £642.'
