In March 1916, Bishop was promoted to Sergeant and continued to serve with the Veterinary corps first in Cairo and then at No. 5 Veterinary Hospital in France. He served for a few months with the 35th Field Artillery Brigade before going on leave in December 1916.

Apon his return, Sergeant Bishop was transferred to the 14th Field Artillery Brigade before sustaining an injury in January of 1917. Sergeant Bishop had fallen from a transport and the wheel of the wagon he’d been riding on rolled over his leg. He was admitted to the 45th Casualty Clearing Station with a fractured left fibula and was subsequently sent to England to recover.

Sergeant Bishop returned to France in May 1917 and was posted to the 13th Australian Field Artillery Brigade. After suffering from another bout of illness from October until December 1917, Bishop was granted furlough, spent some time at the training depot in Parkhouse, England, and then was sent back to France to serve with the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion in June 1918.

In September 1918 men who had served with the Australian Imperial Forces since 1914 were granted a special 2-month furlough and sent back to Australia. Sergeant Bishop qualified and embarked for Australia on 24 September 1918. Arriving on 23 November 1918, Sergeant Bishop remained in Australia until his discharge on 23 January 1919.

Over a year after the war ended, Sergeant Bishop married Berth Elizabeth Burgess on 9 June 1920 in Bathurst and moved to Arthurville, a soldier settlement around 25 km west of Wellington. Bishop passed away on 29 June 1955 at Arthurville at the age of 69.
