This is the first and primary Memorial of three in the Cleveland area to memorialise the same WWII event, the loss of two Wirraway Aircraft operated by 23 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force.

On 13 February 1942, Wirraways A20-100 and A20-290 collided while engaged in air fighting tactical training over Moreton Bay. As a result all four airmen were killed.

The aircraft, or parts thereof, landed at three locations. A20-290 crashed in the vicinity of this location, the Cleveland Cemetery, with its wing landing in the Cleveland State School. A20-100 crashed in the tidal flats now known as Ziegenfusz Park.

Memorials have been erected at each location.
