HMAS Goorangai
HMAS Goorangai was the first ship of the Royal Australian Navy lost during World War II. Originally built as a steam trawler she was requisitioned by the Commonwealth and converted for use as a minesweeper. On the night of 20 November 1940 while transiting from Queenscliff to Portsea in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria she was struck by HMAT Duntroon.
She was hit amidships and sank in less than a minute with the loss of the whole crew of 24 officers and ratings. Six bodies were eventually recovered with the remainder of the crew presumed to have either been killed in the collision or drowned. .
