David Peter Greenham
David Peter Greenham was born on 14th February 1889 in Dartmoor, Victoria, to James Greenham and Margaret, nee Iverach. David attended Wesley College and then the University of Melbourne, obtaining a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery by 1908.
David arrived in Corryong in 1913 and instantly devoted himself to a life of service. He participated in a variety of sports, serving as President of both the Golf Club and the Tennis Club. He was also a keen Freemason and a Justice of the Peace.
He enlisted on 3rd November 1917, naming his brother, Albert, as his next of kin. After initial training, he embarked on HMAT A71 Nestor at Melbourne, Victoria, on 21st November 1917 with the rank of Captain AAMC (Australian Army Medical Corps).
During his enlistment period, he was also a member of the No. 9 Australian Field Ambulance and No. 10 Australian Field Ambulance, being transferred to those units on 5th June 1918 and 2nd July 1918, respectively.
David was admitted to the 8th General Hospital in Rouen, France, on 8th July 1918, suffering from a ruptured Achilles tendon in his right leg.
Prior to his return to Australia on 25th September 1919, aboard HT Mahana, he completed a three-month surgical course in London. He was discharged on 12th December 1919, being awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service during the war.
David Peter married Amelia Susan “Millie” Gray on the 15th January 1920, Melbourne, Victoria. The couple moved back to Corryong, and David took up his practice. He joined the Corryong Sub-Branch of the RSSILA, serving as President between 1921 and 1938, and again in 1940 to 1941. In 1938, he was chosen to be part of the Guard of Honour to their Majesties the King and Queen at the unveiling of the Australian War Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux. It was due to his professional guidance that the District Hospital developed and expanded.
He passed away on 4th January 1945 at Richmond, Victoria and was buried in Melbourne General Cemetery, Parkville, Victoria. Millie passed away on 4th April 1961 and was buried alongside David.
