Archibald James (Jim) Hill was born on 18th July 1892 in Corryong, Victoria, to Archibald Hill and Emily, nee Collins.

On 29th May 1916, he enlisted at Melbourne, Victoria. At the time, he was a single, 24-year-old labourer from Corryong, Victoria. He was allocated Regimental Number 2573 and placed in the 4th Reinforcements for the 3rd Pioneer Battalion. Jim gave his next of kin as father, Archibald Hill. After initial training, he embarked on HMAT A16 Port Melbourne at Melbourne, Victoria, on 21st October 1916.

In early February of 1917, Jim was admitted to the Fargo Military Hospital suffering from bronchial pneumonia. His illness was severe, and it resulted in his being classified as “Return to Australia”.

On 22nd July 1917, he returned to Australia aboard HMAT A71 Nestor, with the rank of Private. He was discharged on 1st November 1917 and was awarded the British War Medal for his service during the war.

Jim married Margaret Theresa Reidy in Wangaratta in 1918. He later married  Myrtle Ivy May Rosman in 1946 at Brunswick. He passed away on 26th March 1963 at Royal Melbourne Hospital and was buried in Altona Memorial Park, Altona, Victoria.
