Louis Woodhouse Masters
Louis Woodhouse Masters was born in 1886 in Corryong, Victoria, to Alfred Charles Masters and Sarah Ann, nee Woodhouse.
On 6th October 1915, he enlisted in Melbourne, Victoria. At the time, he was a single, 29-year-old stockman from Corryong, Victoria. He was allocated Regimental Number 19813 and placed in the 30th Battery of the 8th Field Artillery Brigade. Louis gave his next of kin as father, Alfred Masters. After initial training, he embarked on HMAT A7 Medic at Melbourne, Victoria, on 20th May 1916.
Louis was evacuated from France on 26th October 1917, suffering from having a piece of loose cartilage in his left knee. This was a pre-existing condition, Luis having had two earlier operations, the first 13 years ago and the other 8. After having his third operation, he walked with a slight limp, and at times his knee gave under him. He was transferred from the Ontario Military Hospital at Orpington to the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital at Dartford, where he remained until late January of 1918.
On 15th April 1918, he returned to Australia aboard HMAT A74 Marathon, with the rank of Gunner. He was discharged on 12th June 1918 and was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal for his service during the war.
After the war, he settled back in Corryong, living with his parents and working on the family farm. Louis passed away on 4th June 1967 at Corryong, Victoria and was buried in Corryong Cemetery.
