The gun is a MK11/1 1942 model made by the Ordance Factory Australia and was donated by the Department of Defence. Of special interest is the King George Coat of Arms on the barrel. This was to honour veterans but also those unsung people who stayed at home and helped with the war efforts in many different ways. After much debate within the community the majority decided it should be placed at a focal point for those entering or leaving the town. The foreshore area at the beginning of Anzac Parade was chosen. The gun was placed there in 1962 and the District Council of Yorketown donated a flag pole, to be erected alongside. The flag was to be flown at half- mast when a local resident passed away and on other significant occasions and this continues today.

In the 1990’s it was proposed to move the gun to another area and the local residents strongly objected. The Stansbury RSL Committee agreed to repaint the gun. The area was tidied and the Stansbury Primary School children, in conjunction with the community created a garden as a KESAB project and the area is named Cannon Corner. The whole area is a significant memorial to the community and visitors alike.

The Stansbury Primary School children continue to be involved by attending the services and also laying wreaths on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. Prior to these days the children, along with RSL members place Australian Flags on all graves of those who have served.
