Horry the Wog Dog

This statue was commissioned by the Man From Snowy River Tourist Association and unveiled in the RSL Memorial Gardens on Anzac Day 2016.

Horrie was a small terrier 'adopted' by Private Jim Moody in 1941, and became the unofficial mascot of the 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion, despite regulations against the keeping of animals. With the Battalion, Horrie served in Greece, Crete, Palestine and Syria. He would warn the gunners of approaching aircraft. To keep him warm, he wore a coat cut from a soldier's uniform. 

When Moody returned to Corrying in 1942, he created a special pack to smuggle Horrie home, again contravening military and quarantine regulations. While officials learned of Horrie's presence in the district in 1945 and ordered his destruction, Moody substituted a similar dog from the local pound and surrendered the imposter. Horrie survived.
