Warrandyte Memorial Gardens and Tower
According to documents published online by the Doncaster-Templestowe Historical Society and Manningham Council, the original Warrandyte War Memorial and terraced gardens were constructed and established in 1922. Returned World War I soldiers and the families of those who did not return purchased the land and gifted it in perpetuity. The terraced gardens built in front of the new Returned Soldiers building, were located so that they had a view across to the Yarra River and the historic bridge.
In 1936, members of the local returned soldiers built the 25-foot stone memorial tower within the gardens. Local stonemason, Kevin Sloan, used local sandstone and ‘random rubble’ to build it. Originally, a clock was supposed to be mounted three-quarters of the way up the tower, and a gun to be placed at the base.
Subsequent conflicts (WW2, Malaya, Korea and Vietnam) have been acknowledged with plaques.
Within the gardens are some small markers at the foot of trees dedicated to a number of personnel KIA.
The gardens are maintained by the Warrandyte RSL
