No 3 Wireless Air Gunners School Memorial Wall
The RAAF Station Maryborough Memorial Wall honours 569 men who had trained or served at 3W.A.G.S and were killed in active service. Between October 1941 and December 1944, there were 29 courses provided by No.3 Wireless Air Gunner School. As Wireless Operators Air Gunners or Air Gunners, they became crew members for various RAF and RAAF squadrons and served in all theatres of the war in many types of operations and in a wide variety of aircraft during World War II. Those who perished, died as a result of air battles, aircraft accidents or as Prisoners of War and many rest isolated from their homeland. Hundreds of hours of research have been undertaken by volunteers to identify each of the men killed in active service by referring to the Personnel Occurrence Reports P.O.R. for each of the courses delivered for Wireless Air Gunners at 3W.A.G.S. The Memorial Wall is unique in that it is located within the actual area where 3W.A.G.S operated during World War II. It features 24 weathered steel composite panels. 23 panels recognise each of the men who trained at 3W.A.G.S with their names and the course they attended laser cut into the panels. One panel is dedicated to the Pilots and Staff who served at the base and also died in active service. Unveiled in September 2024 the Memorial Wall commemorates and preserves an important part of Australia’s wartime aviation history as a legacy to the men killed in active service, who came from all parts of Australia and trained at 3W.A.G.S Maryborough.
