Thanksgiving services were held in Crystal Brook Memorial Park on Wednesday 9th May 1945 to celebrate the end of the war in Europe.

The march, which started from the council chamber, was headed by the Returned Soldiers, followed by the Volunteer Defence Corps, Fathers' Association, Nurses, Boy Scouts, Civil Servants, Fighting Forces Comforts Fund ladies, Volunteer Service Detachment ladies, children from the local school and Catholic Convent.

All paraded to Memorial Park where Mr. P. O’Shaughnessy presided reading the pledge of remembrance while Reverend M. Morris conducted the service. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. The rotunda was decorated with flowers by the ladies of the Fighting Forces Comforts Fund and helpers.
