The Design Process
In 2013, the City of Melville and the Applecross RSL began discussing the development of a new war memorial for the local community.
First World War Soldiers Associated With Captains Flat NSW
The following list describes a number of soldiers whose First World War record indicates an association with Captains Flat, NSW.
Three Locations
The Bassendean War Memorial has had three locations within the district.
The original site was on the corner of Wilson Street and Perth Road from 1920-1969.
Gallantry Awards for Enoggera Boys.
Several men whose names appear on the Enoggera State School Roll of Honour received awards for gallantry during WW1.
The Ferguson Brothers of Enoggera.
Whilst researching the names listed on the Enoggera State School Roll of Honour we noted there were several surnames that were repeated.
Second World War Veterans Born In Captains Flat

Warriors' Chapel, Presbyterian Church of St Andrew, Canberra
The Rev. John Walker, who lost three sons in France in the Great War, conceived the building of a Warriors' Chapel within the church construction.
Bruce Astley
Bruce Astley was an ex-student of Dubbo High School. He was the third son of Laurence Astley, the donor of the Astley Cup.
Edward Maxwell England DFC
Edward Maxwell England was in the RAAF. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Edward was killed in a flying school accident in the UK on 25 February 1945.

A number of the men whose names are on this honour roll were ex-students of Dubbo High School.
Anzac Memorial Park dedicated in 1991
Hurstbridge Memorial Park was established in 1991 as a remembrance place for all wars. It sits at the bottom of Anzac Avenue and has a rock cairn for wreath laying.
Shire of Nillumbik Memorial to honour 100 years since the First World War
To commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War the Shire of Nillumbik erected a number of memorial cairns at the site of existing war memorials.
Creation of Hurstbridge Memorial Park and Recreation Reserve in 1921
The Hurstbridge Memorial Park and Recreation Reserve was created by the people of Hurstbridge in 1921 in conjunction with the Avenue of Honour now known as Anzac Avenue. M
Narromine Cenotaph
Dedicated 1924. Fence added 1929 by Tom Perry in memory of his father.
Gatton Shire Roll of Honour
Gatton Shire Roll of Honour is a wooden honour roll that commemorates those from the Shire who served in World War Two and Post World War Two conflicts.
Long Tan Cross
This replica Long Tan Cross was erected by Gatton RSL Sub Branch on the 50th anniversary of the battle.
Moorabbin WWI Memorial
These two obelisks were relocated in 1999 - 2000 from the original location in Cheltenham Park, off Park St, to the Memorial Precinct at Cheltenham RSL.

Australia’s recruitment for the First World War began quickly as men flocked to recruiting depots to join up.
Relocations of memorial

A history of the Avenue of Honor in Euroa
The idea of planting an Avenue as a Memorial originated in the 1920's. Costs acted as a barrier to construction.

Private John Charlton Boer War Memorial Stained Glass Window is now on display at the Shrine of Remembrance
The Charlton Memorial Window Committee, with support from a Victoria Remembers Grant, restored the stained glass window and donated it to the Shrine of Remembrance in 2016.
